San Diego Padres The San Diego Padres are a Major League Baseball team based in San Diego, California since their founding in 1969. They play in the National League Western Division. The Padres adopted their name from the Pacific Coast League team which arrived in San Diego in 1936. That minor league franchise won the PCL title in 1937, led by then-18-year-old San Diegan Ted Williams. In 1969, the San Diego Padres joined the ranks of Major League Baseball as one of four new expansion teams, along with the Montreal Expos (now the Washington Nationals), the Kansas City Royals and the Seattle Pilots (now the Milwaukee Brewers). Their original owner was C. Arnholt Smith, a prominent San Diego businessman and former owner of the PCL Padres whose interests included banking, tuna fishing, hotels, real estate and an airline. Despite initial excitement, the guidance of longtime baseball executive Buzzie Bavasi and a new playing field, the team struggled; losing 100 games or more four times. Far From Cellar, San Diego Tops List of Buyers Before the season, conventional wisdom said the San Diego Padres would be active leading to the nonwaiver trading deadline. The wisdom was correct, but in a way few people expected. The Padres reached Saturday's deadline with the best record in the National League, at 60-41 before their game at Petco Park. In the last three days, they added two veteran hitters without losing any pitchers from the majors' stingiest staff.

BATS; Keeping Score: What's Made Padres Better? Pitching In 2009, the San Diego Padres had the second-smallest payroll in baseball and finished with a 75-87 record. Given the strength of their divisional opponents and the lack of changes the Padres made during the off-season, most experts viewed them as a likely fourth- or fifth-place finisher again this year. But the Padres have exceeded expectations and lead the National League West just a week before the season's halfway point. How have they managed this drastic turnaround?
